Chapter Nineteen

Greg

Last night didn’t go as planned. Not even close. I knew the conversation with Jake had upset Em, but I hadn’t realised just how much. By the time I convinced her that Jake didn’t think less of her, she’d passed out on me. It gives me yet another first—sharing a bed with no sex. My morning wood, which is evening wood, only harder and more painful, urges me to wake her up. Explore her body. But it would be a violation when we’re not lovers yet.

So, I do another first and lie on my side watching Em sleep, a soft, barely there snore, breaking the quiet of the bedroom. I count the freckles on her nose. Across her cheeks. Then kiss the tiny frown mark in the middle of her forehead. Her eyelashes flutter, but she doesn’t stir. Having Em lying next to me feels right. Like she’s meant to be here. Forever. Instead of sending shivers down my spine, the thought warms the cold organ in my chest.

I roll out of bed, my groin throbbing, throw on a dressing gown and slippers and head into the living area. Silas pants and thumps his tail. I let him out of the crate and slide open the back door. He charges outside. His first stop is the fence where he once spotted a possum. He does it every morning without fail, but I’m not sure if he’s ever seen the possum again. Still, he lives in hope.

A faint tinge of pink glistens on the horizon. I inhale the brisk air and blow out a stream of fog. Something about first light calls to me: a new day, a chance to start over. And with a beautiful woman lying in my bed, it’s starting off nicely.

Silas returns, and I slide the door shut. I pop a pod into the espresso machine, pour my coffee and take a sip. The hot liquid hits the spot, warming my insides and sending a buzz through my body.

I prepare a pot of tea and toast. Em loves her food, so as long as she doesn’t have a major hangover, she’ll be hungry. I linger at my bedroom door. Do I let her sleep? Wake her? The semi I’ve been sporting all morning answers the question. I adjust myself and turn the knob.

Em’s fiery mane fans across the white pillow. She looks like a pint-sized angel in the king-size bed. The door clicks behind me, and I’m rewarded with a flicker of blue and a shy smile. “Hi.”

“Hi, yourself.” I stroll to the bed, trying not to look too eager. “How are you feeling?”

“Not too bad.” She shuffles upright, eyeing the food. “Breakfast in bed?”

“Figured you’d be hungry.”

She pulls at the T-shirt I changed her into last night, her smile fading. “You undressed me?”

I don’t like the way she’s looking at me. Like I’d take advantage of her drunken state. “Em, I didn’t touch your bra or knickers or anything in their vicinity. I just wanted you to sleep in comfort.
